In Hawaii, As far as I know, only 5 species of doves live in this state. The most common dove species in Hawaii is the Zebra Dove. Also, the other 4 species of doves are – Spotted Dove, Barred Dove, Eurasian Collared Dove and Mourning Dove.

Are Doves in Hawaii Native or Non-Native Species?

All the doves in Hawaii, including the Zebra Dove, Spotted Dove, Barred Dove, Mourning Dove and Eurasian Collared Dove, are all non-native species.

1. Zebra Doves:

Zebra Dove have also brown feathers. They can grow up to 23 centimetres in length with a wingspan of 24-26 cm. They are known for their “cooing” call. 

Zebra Doves eat seeds and insects, small fruits and other vegetation.

Zebra Doves have a black and white striped pattern on their necks, that’s why they are named “Zebra“.

2. Spotted Dove:

Another species of dove found in Hawaii is the Spotted, Dove. It is larger than the Zebra Dove.

It has greyish-brown in colour with black spots on its wings and back.

This is also a non-native dove species found in Hawaii.

Habitat: urban areas, agricultural fields, woodland, scrub, farmland, habitation, and gardens.

They are generally considered to be non-migratory in Hawaii. Spotted Doves eat grass seeds, grains, fallen fruits, and seeds of other plants. 

3. Eurasian Collared Dove:

The Eurasian Collared Dove is also found in Hawaii. They are also common doves in Arizona.

It has a greyish-brown body and a distinctive black collar around its neck. This is also a non-native species in this state.

The Eurasian Collared-Dove is not a native bird species of North America. It was introduced into the Bahamas in the 1970s after the 1980s it spread throughout North America. 

Habitats: bare ground, telephone wires, and trees. They make nests on trees with small straws. 

4. Mourning Dove:

Mourning Dove is another type of Dove species in Hawaii.

Mourning Dove is commonly seen in telephone wires in some places and forage for seeds on the ground.

This dove has a slender tail, a small head, black eyes, and a black small beak. 

Diet: corn, millet, buckwheat, Rye, pine nuts, foxtail, peanuts, canary grass, wheat, sunflower seeds, rapeseed, etc.

5. Barred Dove:

The Barred Dove another name Zebra Dove found in Hawaii. Here’s some information about this bird:

Barred Doves are small birds. They can grow up to 20 cm in length. They have brown bodies with black and white stripes on their necks, giving them a “barred” appearance.

Barred Doves eat seeds, fruits, and insects.

Habitat: grasslands, open woodlands, and urban areas like gardens and parks.
